Could I be sued in the United Kingdom for driving without insurance abroad?
Last year, I was struck by a driver speeding while driving my car Italy husbands. The driver of the other vehicle immediately ran even if myself, my husband and our daughter 1 year old were injured. At the time of the accident we had been in Italy for about 5 months and although I had all the relevant documents to drive the UK, does my insurance cover me for 30 days abroad. We returned home shortly after so I can receive further treatment and I ignored the demands of the Italian police to provide details on my assurance that I knew Now that we were not covered. Today I received a letter from the Motor Insurers' Bureau and said they were contacted about the issue and may I please get in touch (via a lawyer if necessary) with my insurance details. I'm now really lest while being ill and not afraid to make a claim, I could also be prosecuted in the United Kingdom (or my husband because he was his vehicle). Does anyone know where I am?
Short answer, yes. You have committed a driving offense within the European Union. All driving offenses committed within the EU are subject to your country of origin and legal action may be taken.
