Is it possible for me to claim compensation??

I had a bad road traffic accident in august last year, it was my fault. I am extreemly lucky to have survived. The police felt that I was driving without due care and attention, although they are not charging me for this. Is it possible to claim compensation?
The compensation would be for my loss of earning over the period. Please also note if i had been hoping for a moral debate i would have posted my question on a different page;)

You want compensation for what?? You admit it was your fault. Your insurance will pay for most of your damages (providing you had insurance). You sound like a left wing liberal looking for a handout.
